Meet Penny
The cat who changed everything.
She wasn’t supposed to be mine.
Penny was found living under a dumpster at my ex-wife Denise’s workplace – skinny, scrappy, and completely unbothered by the situation. Denise caught her, cleaned her up, and then did what Denise does best: made a very convincing argument that this was a cat I needed in my life.
She was right. It changed everything.
From a dumpster in Florida to the National Parks of America. That’s not a bad second act for anyone
Penny made her road debut during Season Two of 50 at 60, riding along through Florida, Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia in an RV that she quickly decided was hers. She was not wrong.
But her most important role came off the road. Through every editing session that followed… hundreds of hours of footage, late nights, hard cuts… Penny was there. Curled in the director’s chair beside me. Occasionally inserting herself directly between my face and the screen when she felt her input was being overlooked. Every final edit of the 50 at 60 series carries her unofficial paw-stamp of approval, delivered somewhere between a nap and a stretch.
She didn’t travel to all 50 states. But she was present for every story that came out of them.
Now, as I plan the Road to 63 , visiting all 63 US National Parks, Penny has made it clear she has opinions about coming along. I’m listening. RV research is underway with her comfort very much in the equation.
Chief Adventure Officer is not a courtesy title. It’s earned.
